Steppers Voices: Becoming a Goalie, Lin Thomas

At 64, I never imagined I would become a goalkeeper. I had never played in goal before, but walking football gave me the opportunity to try something completely new.

I took on the role of goalkeeper four years ago, and it has certainly been a learning curve!

Feeling proud with our medals!

I’ve had my share of injuries, with the latest being a dislocated finger during our tournament in Hull. The shock and pain were something else, but it was another lesson learned. I now know to strap my fingers before tournaments and make sure I’m as prepared as I can be.

Some of the shots can be unbelievably powerful. When a ball is travelling that fast, sometimes all you can do is get something in the way! It can whizz past you and catch just the tips of your fingers, and you quickly realise that being a goalkeeper isn’t as easy as it looks!

Despite the injuries and the odd bit of pain, I really enjoy the challenge. I’m learning every time I play, building my confidence and improving my positioning and reactions.

Taking on the role of goalkeeper — something I had never done before — has shown me that it’s never too late to try something new.

I may not have started out as a goalkeeper, but I’m certainly enjoying the journey — one save, one bruise and, occasionally, one dislocated finger at a time!

And when I make a good save, there’s no better feeling.
