Charmaine Bent
Steppers Women of Colour Walking Football Club Spotlight Interview
Interviewer: Denise James
Interviewee: Charmaine (Steppers centre mid player & professional referee)
Introduction
Fresh from training — tired but exhilarated — I caught up with one of our Steppers players to talk about football, refereeing, and staying active at any age.
We’re always grateful for those who support Steppers, whether through donations, spreading the word, or joining us on the pitch.
We are always welcoming women of colour aged 40+ to come and join us.
Also, we have our 5th anniversary celebrations coming up in April, watch this space. See the Eventbright link below –

Today, I’m delighted to be interviewing Charmaine.
The Interview
Denise: Charmaine, thank you for speaking with me today. First of all, what position do you play for Steppers? And if you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?
Charmaine: I don’t mind at all. I am 57 and I play centre mid. I’ve been playing for Steppers for over four years now.
Denise: And how did you find Steppers?
Charmaine: I tried another team first, but then I was recruited to Steppers. I really felt there was a need for women of colour to have a space like this. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it over the last few years — the camaraderie, the teamwork, keeping fit, and also the social side of football.
Denise: That really comes through. You also trained to be a referee. What made you do that?
Charmaine: I started by helping out with women’s football on the sidelines, just refereeing informally. My coach at the time suggested I try refereeing 11-a-side football. I went on a course and I’ve been doing it ever since.
Denise: And where are you refereeing now?
Charmaine: I referee mainly in Essex, and some games in London as well. I also referee women’s national-level matches.
Denise: That’s amazing — we’re always learning new things about each other at Steppers! How was the referee training itself?
Charmaine: It really wasn’t that bad. It took place over a few weekends — I can’t remember exactly how many because it was about four years ago now. I didn’t find it too difficult. There’s ongoing development, yearly training, the Laws of the Game to keep up with, and even an app that helps you stay updated. I’d honestly recommend it to anyone.
Denise: That’s really encouraging to hear.
Charmaine: Yes — if you’re fit enough. There’s actually no age cap – which surprises a lot of people- because of the age discrimination act. I thought there used to be one, but there isn’t. I started refereeing at 53.
Denise: I love that. At Steppers age is nothing but a number. Thank you so much Charmaine for taking the time to speak with me today.
Charmaine: Thank you.

What this interview quietly but powerfully shows is something we sometimes forget to say out loud: Steppers women are seriously multi-talented. That’s the real magic of this club.
